Program Description

Kali is a Filipino Martial Art (FMA) built around weapon-based fighting including sticks, blades, as well as empty-hand techniques, that develops coordination, timing, awareness, and practical self-defense skills.

Class Format

Training includes single stick, double stick, stick and dagger, knife work, Panantukan (Filipino boxing), and Sikaran (Filipino kicking).

Instruction emphasizes fluid movement, adaptability, and natural body mechanics, helping students develop practical skills rather than relying on rigid patterns or fixed sequences.

Weekly Schedule

Kali and Filipino Martial Arts classes are typically an hour long and are held Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 PM, with Saturday sessions dedicated to weapons training at 1:00 PM and open-hand techniques at 2:00 PM.

Lineage

Our Kali curriculum is rooted in the teachings of Grandmaster Dan Inosanto, one of the most influential figures in Filipino Martial Arts, and draws from 26 primary sources, including the late Grandmaster John LaCoste.

This diverse lineage preserves a broad range of traditional techniques and training methods while emphasizing practical application and adaptability.

Kali Instructor Guy S.

Coach Guy has trained in Kali, Maphilindo Silat, and related Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) for over twelve years, studying under Guro/Kru Krysta Scharlach with exposure to world-renowned instructors including Guro Dan Inosanto, Ajarn Chai, Professor Pedro Sauer, Jeff Curran, Mike Matthews, Mark McFann, and others.

Coach Guy’s professional background in public safety, personal training, and security contracting gives him a practical, real-world perspective on Kali as a self-defense discipline. 

Guy continues to train and teach at Pedro Sauer Academy, helping students develop greater knowledge and skill in both Kali and the Filipino Martial Arts.

Who This Class Is For

Kali and Filipino Martial Arts classes at Pedro Sauer Academy are open to adults and teens ages 16 and older.

Students of all experience levels are welcome, and beginners can start training with no prior martial arts or weapons experience.
